Twitter is now called X, and a lot has changed. Here's what still works for driving website traffic.
X (formerly Twitter) is where people go for news, opinions and fast-moving conversations, especially in tech, finance, media, politics and marketing. If your customers are there, it can send a steady flow of visitors, particularly when you share opinions and practical knowledge.
Some old advice is now out of date. Moments have gone, built-in analytics need a paid Premium subscription, and Elon Musk has asked people to stop using hashtags. In July 2026, X's leaders said posts with links are no longer held back, but test this on your own account.
Be useful in public, every day, and give people a reason to click.
- Twitter is now X; Moments have gone
- Analytics now need Premium
- Daily, useful posting and replies drive results
Your profile is where curious readers decide whether to follow you or visit your site.
I've rewritten 200+ landing pages.
Here are the 7 fixes that lift sign-ups every time 🧵
Free checklist: danprice.co.uk/checklist
- Bio: who you help, result, reason to click
- Link to a useful landing page
- Pin your best thread
Pick the people you want to reach and the conversations they're having.
- Make a private List of 30 to 50 accounts your customers follow.
- Note the questions they ask and the topics that get replies.
- Join a few Communities in your niche.
- Pick 2 or 3 topics to be known for.
My business: [what you do]. My ideal customer: [who]. List 20 questions or frustrations this customer is likely to post about on X, and for each one suggest a helpful post I could write that leads to [page on my website].
- Build a List of accounts your audience follows
- Join relevant Communities
- Pick 2 or 3 topics to own
X moves fast. Regular posting keeps you in people's feeds and gives your best ideas more chances to land.
| Time | Post type | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | A quick tip | "One word that lifts sign-ups: free. Here's why…" |
| Midday | Replies | 10 thoughtful replies to bigger accounts |
| Afternoon | A thread or long post | "How I rewrote a landing page in 30 minutes 🧵" |
| Evening | An opinion or question | "Hot take: most About pages are useless. Agree?" |
Write a week of posts in one sitting and schedule them with X's own scheduler or a tool like Buffer. Then spend your daily time replying.
- Post at least once or twice a day
- Mix tips, threads, opinions and questions
- Batch-write and schedule
The posts that send traffic give a strong taste of the value, then offer more.
- ✕"New blog post!" + link
- ✕A vague teaser with no value
- ✕The same link every day
- ✓A useful tip + "the full checklist is here"
- ✓A result + "here's exactly how"
- ✓A thread that delivers, then links to the deep dive
- Start with a number, a result or a bold claim you can back up.
- Use short lines and white space.
- Add an image, chart or short video to stop the scroll.
- End with a clear reason to click.
Write 10 X posts (under 280 characters each) promoting this article: [title and URL]. Each should give one useful insight from the article, then a reason to read the rest. Mix formats: tip, stat, question, mini-story. No hashtags. British English.
- Give value first, then offer more
- Lead with numbers, results or bold claims
- Add a visual to stop the scroll
Links are back in favour on X, according to its leaders. Here's how to make them work.
| Approach | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Link in the post | Now fine to try again, as X says links aren't held back. Test reach. |
| Link at the end of a thread | The thread delivers value; the last post points to the full resource |
| Link in a reply | When someone asks or a conversation calls for it |
| Profile website field | Always: your evergreen route to your site |
For years, many people put links in the first reply because they believed X held link posts back. X's product chief said in July 2026 that this is no longer necessary. Try both approaches for a few weeks and compare the results.
Make sure every page you share has a good title and preview image (Open Graph tags), so the link card looks inviting.
- X says link posts are no longer held back
- Test link-in-post against link-in-reply
- Give every page a strong preview image
On X, hashtags matter far less than they used to. Clear words do the work instead.
- Use no more than one hashtag, and often none.
- Only use hashtags for live events, chats or campaigns people actually follow.
- Put the words people search for in your post text instead.
- Don't hijack unrelated trending hashtags; it looks spammy.
- One hashtag at most, often none
- Use searchable words in your text
- Never hijack unrelated trends
Smart replies to bigger accounts are the fastest way to get seen by new people on X.
- ✕"Great point!"
- ✕"This 👆"
- ✕Pasting your link
- ✓A short, useful extra tip
- ✓A relevant personal result
- ✓A thoughtful counter-point
Aim for 10 to 20 good replies a day. When people like your reply, they tap your name, read your bio and pinned post, and many of them click your link.

Threads let you teach properly. Images and video make people stop.
- Number your thread posts so people know where they are.
- Add screenshots, charts or diagrams to key posts.
- Short, captioned videos work well for demos.
- Premium users can post longer posts and Articles; test whether your audience reads them.
Turn this article into an X thread of 8 posts: [paste article]. Post 1 must hook with a result or promise. Each post under 280 characters, one idea per post. The final post links to [URL] and asks people to repost post 1. No hashtags. British English.
- Threads teach; the last post links
- Add visuals to key posts
- Test long posts if you have Premium
